Video Poker is a popular game that usually will be gambled on in casinos across the globe, or in your house on your PC, using an Internet connection. The rules are very simple and involve the player trying to achieve the greatest combination of cards as you can in order to acquire money. In this respect it’s much the same as a regular game of poker, without the involvement with competing players. Of course, techniques employed during a physical game of poker, like tricking, will be useless here.

The game of Electronic Poker starts when the enthusiast inserts credits (either tokens, credit slips or cash) into the video poker machine and presses the play button. A hand of five cards will be electronically ‘handed out’ on the video screen.

The Video Poker machine also has buttons with ‘hold’ printed on them, and gamblers will need to now pick which cards to hold and which to discard. For the cards the bettor wishes to keep, the ‘hold’ buttons should be pressed so that they light up. The player can decide to keep any number of cards they wish, whether it is all or none.

After the player has decided on which cards he or she wishes to retain, the player will then press ‘deal’, at which point any new cards are needed they will be given out. The round is now finished, with the Electronic Poker machine analyzing the hand to see if it matches any of the winning hands printed on the payout schedule.

Typically, the minimum succeeding hand on a Video Poker machine is a pair of jacks with the award money growing for each better hand. A list of common winning hands begins with jacks or better, and moves on to 2 pairs, 3 of a kinds, straights, flushes, full houses, four of a kinds, straight flushes and finally royal flushes. It goes without saying that the pay out schedule can change from game to game, so that experienced gamblers are agile enough to choose the most money-making machine every instance.

As soon as the initial round has finished, the player can either decide to stay on and try to to maximize their earnings, or press the ‘collect’ button to retrieve any cash that they may have won. Further, several versions of the game give the player an opportunity to increase their winnings, in which situation another game is played. There are also differences between specific machines, with some decks of cards having wild cards and other differing aspects to increase playability.
